Schenectady’s Historic Stockade: Governor Yates House, 18×24, Oil on Masonite, Schenectady, New York, September 2009. Status: Sold. History: Joseph Yates was the first mayor of Schenectady and the 4th governor of New York State (1823-1825). This house, originally two stories with gambrel roof, was erected in 1760. The addition on the left (featured in this painting) was his law office.

Arthur’s Public Market is recognized by historians as the oldest, continuous food market in the United States, operating since 1795. With the Lawrence the Indian Monument practically on its front porch, Arthur’s serves as a landmark icon for Schenectady New York’s Historic Stockade.

Inspiration: The rose garden is one of my favorite aspects of living in Schenectady County. While sharing one last visit with my sister before a two year international trip, I was able to paint this by her side.

First Reformed Church Schenectady Stockade, 5×7, Oil on Masonite, Schenectady Stockade, New York, June 2010. Status: For Sale. Statement: The First Reformed Church is Schenectady’s oldest congregation. The church has kept records since 1680. The records include ministries to the Mohawk Indians, Gen. George Washington’s presence at a worship service during the Revolution, printing money, the change from Dutch to English to American, and the pastorate of the Rev. Dr. George R. Lunn, who left the pulpit to became Schenectady’s Socialist mayor in the early 1900’s.

Schenectady’s Historic Stockade: Hendrick Brouwer House, 5×7, Oil on Masonite, Schenectady Stockade, New York, June 2010. Status: For Sale. Statement: The Hendrick Brouwer House was built before 1700, with later additions to the side and rear. With some cellar beams 13 inches square and foundation walls 25 inches thick, the house also has secret rooms with one rumored to be connected to an undergound passage leading to the river. Brouwer was a fure trader and known for his fairness to Indians.
